Roughneck at work

Deep water drilling requires some very specialized equipment. Here a roughneck is greasing a connection on a buoyancy section of drilling pipe that's about to be lowered into the ocean. A mile's worth of drilling pipe requires many of these joints in order to lessen the weight of the pipe strand. Without these buoys the weight of the pipe couldn't be sustained without breaking.
